Daniel’s First Month29th January 2019
Having joined in early December 2018 as a Paralegal in our Court of Protection team, Daniel Peacock reflects on his first month working at EMG Solicitors.
The first month of a new job can bring about a mix of emotions. Excitement, elation and anxiousness to name a few. After the first day, it became clear to see that the latter would soon dissipate. When interviewing for the position I have fond memories of how welcoming everybody was. This instantly lifted my mood and settled my nerves somewhat. Whilst in the waiting room to be seen I remember seeing a picture wall of all the staff members, each with a little description of who they were. It was refreshing that the first questions I was asked were: ‘Who is Daniel?’ ‘What does Daniel enjoy?’ and ‘How can EMG help Daniel?’. The amount of knowledge which the staff members had on technical areas of law was astonishing. It may be cliché, but you only get one chance at a first impression and having entered the interview thinking EMG were experts in their fields, I left knowing that they were.
Right from the start it was easy to see why EMG have been awarded Lexcel accreditation. The team here take the time to get to know each client and to understand each of their requirements. Knowing that each and every one deserves an approach which is best suited to them individually is at the heart of EMG’s ethos.
Since working in the Court of Protection team I have been given the opportunity to work on a number of complex and exciting cases. Predominantly, I have assisted some of the solicitors in the day to day management of client files and this has allowed me to build relationships with clients, third parties and other professionals. Being able to speak to clients and work with them to resolve issues is something with I have enjoyed immensely. One thing I have found is that no two days are the same. It is reassuring to have regular training given by senior members of the team who have a vast amount of knowledge and experience in the area. In these training sessions, I often find myself taken back at how detailed explanations on technical areas of law are made really simple and easy to digest.
Working closely with Andrea Ingledew, who has recently been promoted to Associate, I have been able to quickly understand the role which EMG provides to clients both as the Health and Welfare deputies and as the Property and Finance deputies. Colleagues are always on hand to answer any questions which I may have and routinely bounce ideas off of each other. We, as a team, regularly come together to evaluate if there is anything which could be done differently to help our clients and the first monthly meeting I attended emphasised the need to work together with clients towards the same goal.
I was told great things about the culture at EMG and I can say having enjoyed my first month at the firm, everything was true! From the office layout right down to the weekly Greggs breakfast (a particular highlight!!) there is a certain togetherness which my short article cannot quite do justice.
I’m really looking forward to the next couple of months and am excited to see what it will hold!
