Jo GreySolicitor

Job role at EMG

I joined EMG as a solicitor specialising in family law in January 2020. I deal with all matters relating to family relationships including before marriage or cohabitation, difficulties during relationships and issues arising during the breakdown of a relationship or marriage whether long or short term. I specialise in financial matters particularly those arising from the end of a long term relationship or marriage especially where there are complex assets and liabilities. I also provide help where issues arise concerning children both during separation and after and act for parents and other associated family members.

I am experienced in, and have a particular interest in cases dealing with the relocation of children both in England and Wales and internationally. I am also regularly instructed to provide advice and representation to kinship carers in applications for Special Guardianship Orders and am also building a practice supporting LGBTQI+ clients including marriage, civil partnerships, nuptial agreements, surrogacy and gender recognition in a family law context.

I can also assist clients to gain protective injunctions. In all matters, I can attend court on behalf of my clients and am known as a strong, effective advocate although I work hard to try and resolve matters through negotiation and less formal means where appropriate to do so.

I am passionate about helping people in situations where they or others are vulnerable, hurt or worried. I understand that using a solicitor and dealing with legal matters can be daunting so I work hard to develop a relationship of trust with my clients and provide information they need in an accessible way.

I have worked in law for 10 years and as a solicitor for nearly 5 years specialising exclusively in family law. I have gained all of my family law experience working for two very prominent and well respected firms in the North of England both of which have featured in the Legal 500 and Chambers. I have also, during my training, worked and volunteered at Legacare – a legal charity providing advice and support to patients with terminal or life limited illnesses. I am also a member of Resolution.

Prior to my career in law, I was a senior manager for The Boots Company for 14 years. The skills and experience I gained have proved extremely valuable particularly when dealing with financial matters and negotiating difficult situations.

I have also undertaken a number of voluntary roles in my local community from school governor to editor of my village magazine!

I gained my first degree from Leeds University and completed my legal studies at Northumbria University where I represented the university at the national and international student mediation championships in London and Paris.

What do you like about working at EMG?

It`s still early days but I really like the way the directors of the firm work with everyone. It`s informal and inclusive and it feels like everybody is really listened to and has their chance to have a say in how the business runs and how things can be improved. On my first visit, I was welcomed with open arms. Everyone is so passionate and it feels like an exciting place to work. I feel proud to be a part of a team that is truly client and team focussed.

I also love that we all take turns for the tea round and that there is a regular supply of goodies around the office and a Greggs run each Friday! I just need to remember how everybody takes their brew!

Outside of EMG?

I have two lovely children who keep me very busy. I love live music and can often be found at a gig with my eldest – our record is 4 in one week! I also have two lovely gun dogs who need plenty of walking. I live in a beautiful part of the countryside so have plenty of opportunity to stride out with them. I`m also currently learning to snowboard (badly!) and have discovered the joys of open water and ice skin swimming and at the other end of the temperature scale – hot yoga! I like to cook experimental meals and have a veg patch which gives me lots of ingredients to play with.

I`m a massive Liverpool supporter (my hometown team!) and am utterly thrilled that after many years of trying, the Premiership has finally come home to Anfield where it belongs!
